The Department For Transport (DFT) and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are planning a public consultation on the future development of the MOT Scheme for early 2023. As an industry, we have an opportunity to consult before the process becomes public.
MOT frequency could likely be one of the suggestions discussed in the consultation process. Other key themes could be emissions testing for hybrids, how new technology fits into the existing MOT scheme, and how we can use new technology to improve the MOT scheme.
This consultation presents a unique opportunity for the industry to imagine how we wish the MOT Scheme would function. This is our moment to think outside the box, reflect on the successes and failures of the MOT scheme, and conceptualise how it would serve us all better.
Topics which could be on the agenda are not limited to the following:
> Testing frequency for vehicles (3:1:1 or 4:2:2)
> Emissions testing/battery condition testing (Hybrids / EVs)
> Testing new vehicle technology (Regenerative braking, ADAS, High-tech Windscreens etc.)
> Testing bay size/equipment/layout
> Data collection and monitoring
> Using new technology to improve existing processes
We must take our moment to unite behind positive industry standards that benefit us all. With the massive cost of living crises, the strongest driver for public action will likely be individual financial savings. We must feed our expert opinions into the consultation process to balance this force of public self-interest. Our voices are all we have. Let’s join together to make them heard.
Message us your thoughts on the MOT Scheme now to motsdomatter@motjuice.co.uk so we can feed this into the consultation process in early January.
