During 2021-22 the number of identified fraudulent MOTs hit a record number of 1324. However, the total figure of fraudulent MOTs is estimated to be five times that number, a gap that the DVSA will look to close over the coming years. Of the recorded cases, 710 were the most serious cases relating to dishonesty and negligence. This figure is more than double the number recorded in 2017-18.

In 2021-22, the Crown Prosecution Service successfully prosecuted twenty cases in the criminal justice system against twenty-four defendants for multiple instances of MOT fraud with some perpetrators facing prison sentences. This represented a 900% increase from 2018-19.

The DVSA banned 127 Authorised Examiners and 288 MOT testers from the MOT scheme last year alone, including 85 AE’s and 185 testers, for offences relating to the most serious charges of dishonesty and gross negligence.
